Grand
Parenting - Redefining Your Parent's
Role
You
and your spouse can discuss how much you
want the grandparents to be involved in
your child's life. If you grew up in a
healthy relationship with your parents,
then naturally you want them to be a
part of your new family. If you grew up
in an unhealthy relationship then
perhaps limited or no exposure is
something to be discussed, depending
upon the present relationship you or
your partner have with them. Your spouse
is your family now and your spouse's
feelings must be considered your highest
priority and consideration.
According
to Cherlin and Furstenberg, "The
New American Grandparent: A Place in the
Family, a Life Apart", most
grandparents they interviewed generally
accepted their new role as a loving
companion to their grandchildren with
the parenting left to their children.
But even if you come from the healthiest
family background, your parents and
in-laws at one time or another will
disagree with how you are raising your
child. They will feel you are too
passive or too strict in general or
specific instances. They will determine
your overall parenting style based on
the time you spend with them in the
presence of your children, which is a
completely different parenting dynamic
to judge someone's ability to parent.
