The
Divorced Parent - Effects of Divorce On
Children
One
of the most challenging aspects of the
divorce is to continue to parent your
child together. "At the present
time, available evidence suggests that
parental conflict may prove to be one
critical mediating variable affecting
the post divorce adjustment of
children." (Forehand, Long and
Brody 156) Remember, even though the two
of you have ended your marriage, you are
both your child's parents for life.
Because of this, you will be forever
connected. In the ideal divorce, both of
you will agree on the same disciplinary
techniques as well as providing the same
structure and consequences. Try to
remember the importance of maintaining a
healthy father/child relationship for
your child's future. "Father
absence approximately doubles the risk
of dropping out of school regardless of
a young person's race or
ethnicity." (McLanahan and Teitler
88) Unfortunately many divorced parents
do not agree, especially when their
children are involved. So, how do you
work together to provide the guidance,
structure and nurturing environment your
child needs to succeed in life? Here are
a few steps to help you tackle this
difficult dilemma.
