"How
can a parenting book help build the self esteem
of a child
without first building the self esteem of the
parents?"

School
Bells Are Ringing And Your Child Is
Singing The Blues
One
of your child's biggest stressors is
school. In my private practice, when
summer vacation arrives, every child
expresses feelings of relief as if a
great weight has been lifted from their
shoulders. At the beginning of the
school year, the pressure to get good
grades returns, a nightly struggle to
complete all their homework, new
teachers, new friends, transition from
elementary to middle and middle to high
schools are expressed to me in sessions.
Alleviating
The Stress
You
and your parenting partner set goals for
your child, but like our society, you
probably established results oriented
goals, which is a natural way to
approach goal setting. The goals may be
for your child to maintain an A or B
average. If your child is generally
receiving a B+ average, but is
struggling with one subject, then your
goals may be to maintain the B+ average,
but to work harder on one subject to
bring the low grade up. However, these
are your goals and may not be your
child's goals. You might expect your
child to achieve nothing less than a B
on his report card but your child might
only be capable of C level work.
