"How
can a parenting book help build the self esteem
of a child
without first building the self esteem of the
parents?"

Connect
With Your Child
When
you and you partner first met, you
shared your interests to learn more
about your partner's likes and dislikes.
If you only discussed controversial
issues that evoked heated arguments, you
probably would not have continued your
relationship. The same is true for your
child. Continuous heated arguments with
your child about their behavior will
break down your relationship with your
child. Find new ways to connect or
reconnect with your child. Go to a
movie, listen and find interests in your
child's music, television shows or
activities. You and your partner are
spending quality time with your child.
Do not talk about any issues that might
elicit controversy. Your goal is to
regain a positive relationship with your
child: Discipline can wait! When you
must discipline your child in the
future, your child will be more
receptive. You should see a decrease in
your child's undesirable behavior.
Although
the suggestion above should provide some
benefit to your relationship with your
child, below I provide some other
specific techniques for redirecting
their negative behavior.
